Keeping Promises to Myself

Strengthening Your Relationship with Self: Self-Trust

I used to think trust was something that existed between people.

Trust your partner.

Trust your friends.

Trust your family.

Trust your coworkers.

What I failed to realize was that the most important trust I would ever build was the trust I had with myself.

For years, I broke promises to myself without even noticing.

I promised myself I would rest.

Then I worked instead.

I promised myself I would leave situations that hurt me.

Then I stayed.

I promised myself I would speak up.

Then I swallowed my words.

Every broken promise felt small in the moment.

But over time, those moments accumulated.

And without realizing it, I stopped believing myself.

I became someone I couldn't depend on.

Not because I lacked integrity.

But because everyone else's needs seemed more important than my own.

The turning point came when I made a tiny promise.

A promise so small I couldn't talk myself out of it.

Every morning, I promised to spend five quiet minutes with myself before touching my phone.

Five minutes.

That was it.

And I kept it.

Then I made another promise.

And another.

Slowly, self-trust returned.

Not through grand gestures.

Through consistency.

I learned that trusting yourself isn't about never making mistakes.

It is about knowing that when life gets hard, you won't abandon yourself.

REFLECTION:

Self-trust is built one kept promise at a time.

Keep showing up for yourself.
