The Fear Behind My Need to Control Everything
Recovering Perfectionist

For years, I told myself I simply liked having a plan.
I was organized.
Prepared.
Responsible.
At least, that's what I called it.
The truth was much harder to admit.
I wasn't organized because uncertainty terrified me.
If I could anticipate every problem...
Maybe I wouldn't get hurt.
If I could think ten steps ahead...
Maybe I wouldn't be disappointed.
If I could control every outcome...
Maybe life would finally feel safe.
Control became my security blanket.
Until I realized something.
The tighter I held onto control, the less I actually lived.
I wasn't experiencing life.
I was managing it.
Micromanaging conversations before they happened.
Replaying moments after they ended.
Planning futures that hadn't arrived.
I called it preparation.
My nervous system called it exhaustion.
Healing didn't ask me to become careless.
It asked me to loosen my grip.
To recognize the difference between responsibility and control.
To understand that uncertainty isn't always danger.
Some of life's greatest gifts arrived without my permission.
Friendships.
Unexpected opportunities.
Moments of peace.
They all appeared while I was busy trying to predict everything else.
Now, when I feel the urge to control every detail, I pause.
Not because I have mastered surrender.
Because I am practicing it.
One breath at a time.
REFLECTION
Control promises certainty.
Trust offers freedom.
Choose the one that lets you breathe.
