What My Boundaries Taught Me About Love

Strengthening Your Relationship with Self: Self-Respect

I used to believe love required sacrifice.

Not healthy sacrifice.

Self-abandonment.

I thought loving people meant giving them unlimited access to me.

My time.

My energy.

My peace.

My forgiveness.

No matter the cost.

The problem was that I confused love with availability.

I believed that if I said no, I was selfish.

If I disappointed someone, I was unkind.

If I protected myself, I was difficult.

Then healing introduced me to boundaries.

And boundaries taught me something surprising.

The people who benefited most from my lack of boundaries often struggled the most when I created them.

Not because boundaries were wrong.

Because they changed the relationship.

For the first time, I was no longer offering unlimited access.

I was offering healthy access.

The difference changed everything.

I stopped measuring love by how much I could tolerate.

I started measuring love by how safe I felt being myself.

I learned that self-respect is not something people give you.

It is something you practice.

Daily.

Through the choices you make.

Through the standards you uphold.

Through the ways you refuse to abandon yourself.

REFLECTION:

The moment you begin respecting yourself, you teach others how to respect you too.
